AWS A5.16-13 ERTi-5 Titanium Alloy Welding Wire

AWS A5.16-13 ERTi-5

ERTi-5, Grade 5 (Ti 6AL-4V), commonly called “6-4,” is the most common and widely used titanium alloy grade due to its relatively low cost and good availability. ERTi-5 is considered the ‘workhorse’ of the titanium industry, accounting for over 50% of total titanium usage. It has a UTS of 130,000 psi [895 MPa] minimum, good weldability, and can be heat treated to a higher strength or toughness. Grade 5 is used in aircraft components such as landing gear, wing spars, and compressor blades. Its corrosion resistance is generally comparable to Grade 2 and it is often used in corrosion service where higher strength is required. Typical applications in rocket motor cases, shafts, ordinance equipment, high strength bolting, pressure vessels, keys, airframe and turbine engine parts (spacer rings, blades, wheels, discs).

ERTi-5 Applications

ERTi-5 may be considered in any application where a combination of high strength at low to moderate temperatures, light weight and excellent corrosion resistance are required. Some of the many applications where this alloy has been used include aircraft turbine engine components, aircraft structural components, aerospace fasteners, high-performance automotive parts, marine applications, medical devices, and sports equipment.

ERTi-5 Weldability

ERTi-5 can be welded using ERTi-5 filler metal. Inert gas shielding techniques must be employed to prevent oxygen pickup and embrittlement in the weld area. Gas tungsten arc welding is the most common welding process for ERTi-5. Gas metal arc welding is used for thick sections. Plasma arc welding, spot welding, electron beam, laser beam, resistance welding and diffusion welding have all been used successfully in Ti 6Al-4V welding applications.
